Cabinet Making Fundamentals: Case Construction from Scratch

Cabinet making is the discipline that runs from heirloom-quality custom furniture shops to production cabinet shops running 300 units per week. The fundamentals — box construction, joinery, drawer fitting, door hanging — are the same across the spectrum. What differs is scale, material quality, and the tolerance for variation in fit and finish.
This guide covers the core cabinet-making fundamentals for a custom furniture shop or serious beginner: case construction methods, the two main cabinet systems (face-frame and frameless), joinery options, drawer slide selection, and door fitting.
The Two Cabinet Systems
Face-Frame Construction
A face-frame cabinet has a solid wood frame (typically 3/4"×1-1/2" or 3/4"×2" stiles and rails) glued and fastened to the front face of a plywood case. The face frame covers the plywood edge, provides a surface for hinges, and allows doors to overlap the case opening.
Advantages: Stiles and rails from solid wood conceal plywood edges completely; the traditional American cabinet aesthetic; allows partially-inset and full-inset door options; the face frame stiffens the case front and reduces racking.
Disadvantages: More material and labor than frameless; interior opening is slightly narrower (the face frame reduces the opening by the stile widths); requires precise frame construction and glue-up before installation.
Face frame proportions (standard):
- Stile width (vertical members): 1-1/2" to 2"
- Rail width (horizontal members): same as stiles
- Corner joints: mortise-and-tenon (structural), pocket screw (production), or Domino
- Face frame to case: glue + nail (finish nailer, 15-gauge, 1-1/2" nails into case edges)
Frameless (Euro-Style) Construction
Frameless cabinets — the European cabinetmaking system introduced to the U.S. market in the 1970s — use the full plywood face as the door substrate. No face frame; doors and drawers mount to the case directly, covering the plywood edges. Overlay dimensions are standardized around the 32mm hole-spacing system.
Advantages: Faster production (no face frame build); full interior access (no stile in the way); cleaner modern aesthetic; the 32mm system enables standardized shelf, hinge, and drawer mounting at measured hole positions; face edge is covered by doors/drawers.
Disadvantages: Plywood edge banding is visible at any exposed edge; less traditional American aesthetic; case edges must be banded precisely; hinges are typically cup-style (Blum, Grass, Häfele) rather than traditional butt or knife hinges.
For modern custom furniture shops: Frameless is generally faster for production kitchen and bathroom cabinetry. Face-frame is the choice for traditional or transitional aesthetic commissions and for shops whose client base expects the visible solid wood frame.
Case Construction: The Box
The cabinet case (box) is the structural foundation. Everything else — face frame, doors, drawers, interior hardware — attaches to the box.
Material Selection
Primary case material: 3/4" Baltic birch plywood is the professional standard for cabinet boxes. Its 13-ply void-free construction holds fasteners better than lower-quality plywood, sands flat, and provides a stable substrate for hardware. 3/4" furniture-grade hardwood plywood (oak-faced, maple-faced) is used when interior surfaces will be visible without finish.
Case back: 1/4" Baltic birch or 1/4" hardwood plywood. The back provides racking resistance and is a structural element, not just a dust cover. For kitchen wall cabinets: 1/4" back is adequate. For floor cabinets with heavy loads: 1/2" back.
Bottom and shelves: 3/4" material throughout for anything supporting more than 20 lbs per shelf. A 24"-wide shelf in 3/4" Baltic birch with a load of 30 lbs will deflect approximately 1/16" over 5 years — at the edge of visible but not structurally significant. For spans over 24", add 1/4" hardwood edge banding to the front edge of shelves to add cross-section depth (increases bending stiffness significantly).
Joinery: Dado-and-Rabbit System
The standard for furniture-grade cabinet construction is the dado-and-rabbit system: the case sides have dadoes routed at the top and bottom (for the top and bottom panels), and a rabbet at the back edge (for the case back).
Dado dimensions: 3/8" deep × 3/4" wide dado to receive a 3/4" panel (sized 1/32" undersize for snug fit). Router bit or table saw dado stack both work.
Why dado-and-rabbit over pocket screws: A dado joint carries the shelf or panel's weight in shear through the side panel's cross-section, not just through fastener thread engagement. Pull a bottom panel out of a dado joint vs. a pocket screw joint and the difference is dramatic — the dado requires destroying the side panel; the pocket screw simply strips the thread.
Assembly sequence:
- Cut all parts to finished dimension, confirm square
- Route dadoes and rabbets in side panels
- Dry-fit to confirm all fits are snug, case is square
- Apply glue, assemble, clamp
- Check square: measure diagonal corners — equal diagonals = square case; adjust clamps to correct
- Nail back panel into rabbets after confirming square
Squareness and Racking
A case that is not square is permanently unusable. Doors will not close; drawers will not fit; face frames will not align. The only way to confirm square is diagonal measurement.
For a perfectly square case: D1 = D2 (both diagonals equal). A 1/16" discrepancy is generally acceptable for production cabinetry. Anything over 1/8" requires correcting before the glue sets — loosen the clamp on the longer diagonal and apply clamp pressure on the shorter one until the diagonal readings equalize.
Drawer Systems
Drawer Box Construction
A furniture-grade drawer box has:
- Sides and back: 1/2" Baltic birch (preferred) or 5/8" solid wood
- Bottom: 1/4" Baltic birch in a 1/4" × 1/4" groove cut 1/4" up from the bottom edge
- Front: Either the finished face (solid wood, 3/4") or a false front (separate panel attached to a utilitarian box front)
- Joinery: Through-dovetail or box-joint (furniture grade); pocket screw or dado-and-rabbit (production grade)
Drawer box height: for a 5" opening, standard drawer box height is 4-1/2" (1/4" clearance top and bottom for operation with slides).
Drawer box width: for side-mounted slides, drawer box width = opening width minus 2× the slide's required clearance. For Blum Tandem slides, this is typically 1" narrower than the opening (1/2" each side).
Drawer Slide Selection
Undermount slides (Blum Tandem Plus Blumotion, Grass Nova Pro): The professional standard for furniture-grade cabinets. The slide is invisible when the drawer is open; the drawer closes softly on integrated dampening; full extension provides 100% access to drawer contents. Blum Tandem Plus slides are rated to 110 lbs for standard models, 135 lbs for heavy-duty variants.
Cost: $20–$45 per pair (Blum) at contractor pricing. The investment is visible in every interaction with the drawer.
Side-mount full-extension slides (Blum MOVENTO, Accuride 3832): The production alternative where undermount is not feasible. Accurate full-extension; soft-close available as add-on; visible when drawer is open but mechanically reliable. Cost: $10–$25 per pair.
Epoxy-coated side mount (KV, Liberty): Hardware store grade. Adequate for shop furniture, utility storage, and low-use applications. Not appropriate for finished furniture delivered to clients.
Door Construction and Hanging
Frame-and-Panel Doors
The furniture-grade approach: stile and rail frames with floating solid wood or plywood center panels. The floating panel cannot crack as the frame expands and contracts seasonally.
Standard proportions:
- Stile and rail width: 2-1/4" to 2-1/2" (Shaker style), 2-1/2" to 3-1/2" (traditional)
- Panel float: 1/8"–3/16" clearance in groove on each side (allows movement)
- Tenon thickness: 1/4" (for cope-and-stick or loose tenon), matching the groove depth
Cope-and-stick router bits cut both the groove (stick profile) and the mating shoulder (cope) in one pass setup each. Freud, CMT, and Amana all make reliable sets ($50–$120). The setup requires careful height and depth adjustment but produces accurate joints consistently.
Hinge Selection and Hanging
Cup hinges (Euro-style, Blum, Grass, Häfele): Standard for frameless cabinets and face-frame cabinets with overlay doors. 35mm cup diameter; boring jig required for consistent placement. Full overlay, half overlay, and inset options depend on cup geometry. Soft-close integrated or add-on. Adjust in 3 axes after installation. Cost: $3–$7 per hinge at contractor pricing.
Knife hinges: Traditional for inset doors on face-frame cabinets. No cup required; mortise cut into top and bottom of door and frame opening. Completely concealed when door is closed. Time-consuming to install accurately but the cleanest traditional aesthetic.
Butt hinges: Classic and visible. Standard in traditional furniture, painted work, and any aesthetic where the hinge hardware is part of the design.
Door hanging tolerance: A well-hung inset door has 1/16" clearance on all four sides. Achieving this consistently requires accurate case construction and precise door sizing. Use a story stick or digital calipers to verify each opening before cutting doors to size.
Quality Control Before Delivery
Before any cabinet piece leaves the shop:
- All doors open and close without binding
- All drawers extend fully and close flush
- All adjustable shelves are level
- Face frame is flush with case sides (planer, router flush-trim, or hand plane)
- All hardware screws are tight
- Interior surfaces are clean of glue squeeze-out
- Finish is consistent across all exposed surfaces
Glue squeeze-out inside case corners is a frequent oversight. It is ugly, makes cleaning impossible, and signals shop carelessness to a client who opens a cabinet. Remove it with a chisel before finish while still soft, or sand after full cure.
